India have aced the first challenge.

Three matches, three wins, and a T20I series secured with two games remaining. The latest victory in Wellington was emphatic: New Zealand put up a competitive total, only for India’s openers to make the chase look almost routine.

The numbers behind the statement

  • ◆Series: India lead 3–0 in the five-match contest.
  • ◆New Zealand: 198/3 in 20 overs.
  • ◆India: 199/4 in 13.2 overs—a six-wicket victory with 40 balls remaining.
  • ◆Abhishek Sharma: 113 from 38 balls.
  • ◆Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: 45 from 19 balls.
  • ◆Opening partnership: 133 in 7.1 overs.

Those figures describe a dominant performance. The bigger story is the depth behind it.

India’s biggest advantage: another option is always waiting

The idea that India could field three competitive international T20 teams sounds extravagant. Yet it captures something about the choices available.

An opener struggles? Another attacking batter is waiting. A different surface demands a different combination? There are alternatives. Selection increasingly becomes a question of which player fits the role, rather than which familiar name must fill it.

That competition can raise standards throughout the squad. Earning a place is difficult; keeping it requires consistent contributions.

But depth needs direction. Players still need clear roles and a fair run. A strong bench is valuable when it supports confident selection, rather than turning every innings into an audition.

Wellington offered a striking example of that attacking potential. Abhishek and Sooryavanshi applied pressure together, giving New Zealand little opportunity to contain one batter while targeting the other.

New Zealand were beaten, not without quality

It would be too simplistic to say New Zealand have one team for three formats while India have three separate teams. Both countries use specialists and players whose skills travel across formats.

The more useful comparison is flexibility: how many credible options can a team call upon without weakening its approach?

New Zealand also deserve credit for their batting in Wellington. Daryl Mitchell’s unbeaten 89 and Bevon Jacobs’ unbeaten 39 helped the hosts reach 198 while losing only three wickets. India’s bowling therefore has questions to address, even within a convincing victory.

The chase was exceptional. It should not make the first innings disappear from the assessment.

Must the rest of the world copy India?

Other nations should study the principle: develop replacements before an injury, retirement or loss of form makes them necessary.

They cannot all reproduce India’s player pool or resources. They can, however, invest in specialist roles, give emerging players meaningful opportunities and build stronger competition for places.

India’s success makes that task look urgent. It does not make future results inevitable. Even deep squads need sound tactics, reliable execution and the ability to recover from a bad day.

Different formats, different examinations

The next stages of the tour bring five ODIs beginning November 4, followed by two Tests starting November 19 and November 27.

The demands will change

  • ◆ODIs: Build partnerships, manage the middle overs and balance acceleration with wickets in hand.
  • ◆Tests: Negotiate movement, sustain bowling pressure and respond to difficult sessions.
  • ◆Across both: Adapt to conditions instead of assuming T20 momentum will carry the result.

A batter who can transform a chase in twenty deliveries still faces a different examination when the ball moves and the field offers fewer easy scoring options.

CricBubble’s take

Celebrate the series win. India have earned it, and their attacking depth gives supporters plenty to enjoy.

But a successful T20 campaign is the opening chapter of this trip. The ODI and Test sides must deliver their own answers.

The first challenge is cleared. The verdict on the whole tour can wait.
